Book History in East Asia

East Asian Studies 272

Usual Description

This course introduces students to the ways East Asian societies shape and were shaped by books. Using pre- and early modern literary works as case studies, we will examine the materiality and the social and cultural uses of books in China, Japan, and Korea. Some class meetings will be labs in Mudd Special Collections and the Art Museum, where we will study artifacts to learn about the production of books, authorship, reading, and circulation. Previous coursework in literature, book history, East Asian history, art, or religion is strongly encouraged.
