Senior Seminar: Confession, Autobiography, Memoir: Problems in Literary Self-Representation

English 403

Usual Description

We will explore selected problems in self-representation from the Middle Ages to the present. The first module will provide critical models for thinking about the various genres of ‘auto-text,’ which might include everything from diaries to slave narrative to bildungsroman to confessional poetry. Possible topics include narrative theory, fiction vs. nonfiction, social identities, memory, religious practice, and changing conceptions of ‘the self,’ authenticity, and self-expression. The second module will be devoted to independent research projects.
