Soundscapes

First-Year Seminar Program 051

Usual Description

How has sound shaped the history of human experience? This course examines the relationship between sound and social and political power from historical, cultural, and material perspectives. We will “listen” broadly, considering how, before the invention of modern recording practices, authors and artists “captured” sound on the page and, in turn, how technological and industrial developments have shaped the soundscape of modern life.
